2009 Architects Medallion |

Since 1952 the Architects Medallion - as it became known - has been awarded annually to a graduate of the Bachelor of Architecture course from an approved school in New South Wales who has achieved distinction, both in a particular subject area at final level and generally throughout the last two years of the course.
Winners of the Architects Medallion have gone on to come leaders of the profession – and the Board is sure that the graduates nominated by their respective schools for the 2009 Architects Medallion will do the same.
The nominees for the 2009 Architect Medallion were David Burdon, University of Sydney; Thomas Cole, University of New South Wales; Amanda Clarke, University of Technology; and Michael Smith, University of Newcastle.
The 2009 Architects Medallion has been awarded to Thomas Richard Cole, recently graduated from University of New South Wales. The Selection Panel found that Thomas displayed a deep inquisitiveness that was borne out in the philosophy and methodology of the research related to the transient nature of space – in this case, a block of land that was subject to periodic inundation from a nearby creek and the various uses of abandoned buildings within its compound. Results from his observations, investigations and analysis of the transient nature of said space were subsequently successfully applied to a physical project to generate new activities related to the original use and habitation of that space. His enthusiasm and intent to apply his creative and philosophical experiences from these projects to his architecture, together with his excellent academic record, were major factors in deciding the winner of the Architects Medallion.
