Hugo Moline BHTS Winner 2006
Hugo Moline a graduate of the University of New South Wales was awarded the Recent Graduate Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship in December 2006. The topic of his chosen area of research is: "Working with the Informal: Learning from the Informal".
The essential purpose of this Scholarship is that, by facilitating international exposure and experience, graduates of architecture in New South Wales can enhance and broaden their philosophy on the role that architecture plays in Australia's cultural development. The objective is for the returning recipient to apply the gained body of knowledge to the advancement of architecture in Australia to the ultimate benefit of society.
Through involvement in three case studies: CASE studio in Thailand, Estudio Teddy Cruz in San Diego/Tijuana and Comites de Tierras Urbanas and the Caracas Urban Think Tank in Venezuela, Hugo will study the philosophy and techniques of architects working in informal contexts. The documentation of best practice exemplified in each of these case studies will be shared with others through talks, workshops, events and publications. In addition, Hugo will provide status reports and feedback throughout his project through innovative use of web log technology via the Board's website.
Hugo's proposal clearly established the significance of this topic area and presented a well defined project. This is an interesting socially orientated project with an innovative methodology. We look forward to invaluable and sensitive insights which have the potential to advance architecture and promote an understanding of architectural matters in the community.
In an increasingly globalised world, the Board considers that Hugo's proposed study is a worthy subject and commends him to pursue his chosen topic to those who may be able to assist him.
The Board looks forward to his return to Australia, and to the receipt of a report which will become a reference document for others with interest in this field.
