Architectural Future of Newcastle
The NSW Architects Registration Board met in Newcastle on 30 May; the first time the Board has met outside Sydney. Immediately following the meeting the Board presented a public forum, The Architectural Future of Newcastle as part of its brief to promote a better understanding of architectural matters in the community. NSW Government Architect Peter Mould and Deputy President of the Board spoke about the role of architecture in making cities liveable within the context of Newcastle. Professor Steffen Lehmann, Chair, School of Architecture and Built Environment, University of Newcastle then presented two important development proposals he is currently working on, for Newcastle City Centre: the City Campus and the Port City proposals . Newcastle Lord Mayor, John Tate gave his perspective on the architectural future of Newcastle before the audience had an opportunity to ask questions of the panel and put their views.
130 people attended the forum; and in response to the positive feedback, the Board will meet outside Sydney at least once per year and take the opportunity to present similar forums in regional centres around NSW.
Architects’ Listing in Yellow Pages
As part of the Board’s random checks of the Yellow Pages listings to monitor that entries in the Architects Category are architects or architect corporations and firms, all listings in the Architects category of the Yellow Pages on-line directories for Newcastle (100 entries) and Central Coast (56 entries) regions were recently checked.
The Board is pleased to see an improvement in the accuracy of listing. Of the total of 9 inaccurate listings (4 in Newcastle and 5 in Central Coast), 6 entries had previously advised Sensis (Yellow Pages) that they should not be listed in the architect’s category, or had no knowledge of their listing in the category. Once we have completed our checks of directories across NSW we will inform Sensis of our findings. Of the total of 4 non-practising architects listed, three had not renewed their listing because they have retired, and one has restored to the practising category.
12 architects or architect corporations and firms (8 in Newcastle and 4 Central Coast) have an advertisement or website linked to their listing with no reference to their registration number, or the name and number of the nominated architect. We have written reminding them of their obligations under the NSW Architects Code of Professional Conduct and the advantage of including the architect registration number as a way of informing the public of their registration status.
Architects’ Learning Groups
The Board has developed a model to support peer education for architects – Architects’ Learning Groups. The aim of Architects’ Learning Groups is to provide opportunities for architects to undertake formal activities within their own peer network – outside the formal architect networks that currently exist. If a Group follows the guidelines produced by the Board, participants in the Group’s activities can claim formal CPE/CPD hours. For more information click here.

The Client Service Award provides an opportunity for satisfied clients to win recognition for their architect’s service. The selection criteria are focused on common areas of uncertainty and complaint by consumers about architectural services - communication, understanding the processes and management of the contract; and an assessment of the architect’s response to environmental sustainability aspects of the project. Nominations for the 2007 Award close on 28 September 2007. For more information and nomination forms click here.
