Meet the Board in Penrith

eNEWSLETTER

Dear Architects

In partnership with the UWS Urban Research Centre the Board is presenting a public forum Beyond McMansions: What could sustainable housing in Western Sydney be like? The Forum is being hosted by Penrith City Council and will be held at the Q Theatre on 19 June from 4.30 - 6.30pm. We hope to see you there - and that you will join us for drinks in the bar afterwards.  Bookings are essential for this event. See details below.

Prior to the Forum the Board invites architects to an informal meeting from 3-4pm in the Council Room at Penrith Council Chambers to discuss the role of the Board, and in particular any issues that should be put forward for consideration in the Review of the Act that is scheduled to commence towards the end of 2008 (the 5 year anniversary of the implementation of the Act is 30 June 2009).

If you would like to attend this meeting and the Forum please let us know by phone on 9241 4033 or by email siobhana@architects.nsw.gov.au

PUBLIC FORUM

Beyond McMansions: What could sustainable housing in Western Sydney be like?

4.30 – 6.30pm
Thursday 19 June 2008

By 2030, Sydney will add one million people and about 640,000 new dwellings to its metropolitan area. This growth will take place in an era of rising energy costs, infrastructure stress and global warming. Western Sydney will absorb a large share of the growth. The design and performance of our housing stock will be critical to our quality of life, and that of generations to come.

This public forum will tackle these important issues. Expert speakers will outline the issues and propose solutions. You are invited to hear what they have to say and then engage in robust debate.

The public forum is presented by the University of Western Sydney’s Urban Research Centre and the NSW Architects Registration Board, and is hosted by Penrith City Council.

Speakers include:

·         Professor Phillip O’Neill, Urban Research Centre, University of Western Sydney
Why housing in Western Sydney has to change

·         Dr Robyn Dowling, Department of Human Geography, Macquarie University
Why do people want big houses?

·         Peter Mould, NSW Government Architect
How do we produce sustainable architecture in sustainable communities?

·         Caroline Pidcock, PIDCOCK – Sustainability + Architecture
What type of housing is appropriate for outer western Sydney?

When:       4.30-6.30pm Thursday 19 June
Where:     Q Theatre, Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre,
                 597 High Street Penrith
Bookings: Free event, but bookings essential on 9241 4033 or siobhana@architects.nsw.gov.au
